Husky Mobile Workbench and Hutch In-Depth Review

When I am looking to make a major purchase, I want as much information on the product as I can get. I also want to see as many pictures and videos of that product as I can find. I hope to bring that to you with this Husky Mobile Workbench and Hutch review. If you are looking for tool storage options, the Husky brand of toolboxes is an excellent choice in my opinion. I purchased this Husky workbench with hutch and storage end locker from HomeDepot because I wanted to add organization to my garage shop. I’ve searched around and looked at similar toolboxes for quite a while at various places including Lowe’s and Harbor Freight but I kept coming back to the Husky line of toolboxes. I think they are some of the better options for garage hobbyists, mechanics, and woodworkers. This setup will give me a whopping 128,472 cubic inches of storage space!

Amazon, Home Depot, and other affiliate links are used in this post to help support my website so I can continue to make reviews like these.

Ordering and Shipping Experience

The setup I choose actually comes in two separate orders. You can order the base workbench, riser drawers, hutch, and one side locker in one order. I chose to add a second side locker, which you have to order separately. I placed the order on July 26, 2022. Because of the size of these cabinets, they will come via a freight truck. My first order, one side cabinet arrived relatively quickly on August 1st. I was a bit confused as to why only one part of the setup arrived, so I tracked the order and Home Depot’s tracking showed everything was delivered on August 10th. Which was still 9 days away. I used Home Depot’s customer service texting feature and was told that the orders show delivered because the final carrier (a freight company) is in possession of the units. So I waited and waited. I left to go out of town early on August 5th only to get a call from one of my kids late that afternoon that there was a giant box sitting at the end of my driveway. That upset me because the freight company typically called the day before to notify me of delivery and no one signed for the package. Also, I wasn’t going to be home for 3 more days to get it inside.

Husky Heavy-Duty Mobile Workbench With Hutch Actual Size

Thankfully it was the mobile workbench that was delivered and it comes pre-assembled with wheels. My oldest son and daughter were able to unpack it from the pallet and roll it into the shop. I called Home Depot customer service this time and spoke to an actual person about the issue and asked where the other three pieces to my order were because I was still missing the hutch, 2-drawer riser, and one side cabinet. First, I was told that it was lost in shipping and an investigation would be started to find it. I called back the next day and that agent told me that the freight company had it. To say I was getting frustrated with the process was an understatement. I was told to wait until August 10th, the delivery date shown on my tracking. August 10th came and went, and no delivery. I called back and was told it would be delivered the next day. Finally August 11th the remaining three pieces were delivered. I was told in one of my previous calls I would receive compensation for my troubles but would need to call in after everything was delivered. I called back and did receive 10% off each order, totaling just over $173. I thought that was a nice gesture.

I initially paid $2,472.60. After the refund, I paid $2,298. The second side locker cost me just over $100 to have shipped whereas the combo unit shipped free.

Assembly and Set Up

Workbench template to attach the hutch

I will say, Husky makes it fairly easy to get your toolboxes ready for use quickly. All five pieces of my order came on a pallet, well packaged surrounded by styrofoam, and wrapped in cardboard. Everything was scratch-free and 99% dent free. The two-drawer riser had a small dent on the backside that’ll never be seen.

The side cabinets have two casters you have to install with four included bolts. The shelves sit in place on metal tabs and you’re ready to go! For the extra side cabinet I ordered, I had to reverse the door, which was easily done by removing several bolts from the hinges that were attached to the box and re-attaching them on the opposite side.

Husky rubber drawer liners

The mobile workbench comes pre-assembled and all drawers have rubber drawer liners pre-installed. The two-drawer riser that sits on top of the mobile workbench bolts directly to it. However, you first have to remove the wooden worktop. This is easily done by removing four bolts. You do have to use an included template to drill two holes on each end of the wood worktop to bolt the hutch through the wood top into the two-drawer cabinet, making it secure. I messed up here and had the template turned the wrong way because I did not read the instructions (you should read them first). I now have two holes in my worktop that I’ll need to plug with 3/8” dowels. Good thing I have wood glue and dowels on hand.

The hutch is a BEAST. It is very heavy and awkward to maneuver into position on top of the workbench. I had my son help me with this part. Once in position, you secure it to the rest of the workbench as mentioned before. The hutch comes with a 700 Lumen USB Powered LED light bar that attaches to an included shelf made just for the light (more about the light later). This attaches easily with clips into the hutch’s pegboard holes. The hutch has a built-in power strip, which you plug the light into.

The two side cabinets bolt to the sides of the workbench and hutch with supplied bolts, making this one substantial unit. Each side cabinet has power strips on the sides (these can be moved to either side depending on your setup).

Overall Fit and Finish

I have been impressed with the overall fit and finish of the Husky workbench and cabinets. The outside is finished in a matte black, powder coat feeling substance. I do think sawdust (I am a woodworker after all) will stick to this finish quite easily. Each box is trimmed in a glossier finish metal material. I really like the contrast of the colors. All of the doors and drawers open and close easily and I love the soft close feature of the workbench drawers.

The entire unit is being supported by eight, 6-inch tall by 2-inch wide heavy-duty casters that support up to 4,000 pounds!

Husky Side Cabinets

Husky Side Cabinets

The side cabinet surprised me quite a bit. I did not realize it had so much space inside. The door closes and opens very smoothly and has magnetic catches. You get 4 adjustable shelves that can be placed at multiple places inside the cabinet and the bottom of the cabinet acts as a shelf as well. The shelves hold up to 150 pounds per shelf. You could use this as a free-standing cabinet if you wanted to by leaving the wheels off. The side cabinet has a power strip attached and can be moved to the opposite side easily if you want. This gives you power outlets on the outside of the cabinet. The are two rubber grommets on the back to allow cords to pass through without being cut by the metal. The body is welded together making it super strong. The door is lockable and has keys.

I’ve chosen to use the left cabinet to store all of my paints, stains, epoxy, and painting supplies. This cabinet holds several gallons of paint, mineral oil, epoxy, and other items. There are a few holes on the sides of the cabinet that provide some ventilation. I will likely drill a couple more on the back, just to be safe.

Husky Mobile Workbench

Husky Heavy-Duty Mobile Workbench

The foundation of this entire setup is the 61-inch, 15-drawer mobile workbench. If you’ve been inside a physical Home Depot store, you’ve likely seen one of these sitting out on the floor. The mobile workbench has an all-welded construction. It is made from 19 gauge steel, which is a nice thickness and should last me a lifetime. The entire cabinet can hold 3,800 pounds! Each drawer can hold up to 120 pounds. The bottom 9 in. deep drawers and full-width drawers are supported by 2-sets of slides, which can accommodate heavier items up to 200 lbs each. All drawers feature ball-bearing slides that are soft closing. The solid wood top is a great feature providing a lot of extra workspace. You can lock this box and it has two keys provided. There is a power strip mounted on one end that you can move to the opposite side if you wanted.

Husky 2-Drawer Riser

This is a nice add-on to this tool chest. It raises the work surface up making it perfect for a standing desk-style work surface. It also gives you two side-by-side drawers and like the rest of the toolbox, are 120-pound capacity and soft closing. These drawers are also lockable.

Husky Hutch

Husky Hutch Gas Struts Assist with Opening

This is what sold me on this setup. This hutch provided me with a way to close off my laptop and other items to help keep SOME of the sawdust off of it. I am not naive enough to think that no sawdust will get inside. Of course, it will still get dust inside but it will help. The hutch comes with a shelf that you can mount at any height inside the hutch. The LED light magnetically attaches to this shelf on a pivoting piece under the shelf so you can position the light at various angles. The light is very nice to have inside the hutch. It plugs directly into the integrated power strip on the back of the hutch. My shop is very well lit, but still, this light is needed inside. If, however, your shop doesn’t have good lighting, the hutch light probably won’t provide enough light for you. The back and part of the sides of the hutch have a peg board you can use if you have pegs. There are rubber grommets on the back that allow cords to pass through easily. The hutch door opens and closes easily and is supported by gas struts. This door is also lockable and has a key.

What I Don’t Like

Embossed Husky Logo

I’ll share what I don’t like before ending on a good note.

I didn’t care for how Home Depot ships this item. It comes on five different pallets and, apparently doesn't ship from the same location as they may arrive on separate days. In the past, anytime I've had large tools delivered, the freight companies called me the day before and the day of delivery to confirm someone would be home. While I know this isn’t Home Depot’s fault, I purchased from Home Depot so someone takes the blame, right?

Husky Hutch Lid Sticks Out about 3 Inches

I am 5’ 11” tall. The hutch top, when open, you can bump your head on if you’re not careful. I thought about building a base for the boxes to sit on, raising it up a few more inches, but then I would lose the mobility of the unit. When the door is open, it sticks out about 3 inches from the box. I wish the hutch door would slide all the way into the box, this would solve this minor issue.

I don’t like the embossed Husky dog logo on the bottom right of the workbench drawer. At least it’s subtle.

Husky 9-Inch Deep Drawers

Removing the Husky Badge

I do wish the hutch light was brighter. 700 lumens isn’t a lot of light. It’s also a warmer light, meaning it has a yellow tint to it. That’s a preference but I prefer a cooler temperature light.

It is nice that you can lock the side cabinets, hutch, 2-drawer riser, and the workbench. However, there are two issues with this. First, on the workbench, only the center stack of drawers lock. The side drawers do not lock. Second, there are three different keyed locks on this entire setup. The workbench is different than the riser and the hutch. The side cabinets are keyed differently than the other two. So you’ll have 3 separate keys for this combo unit.

I wish the cord on the power strips was a couple of feet longer. They are about three feet long. Five or six feet would be better, in my opinion.

What I Like about the Husky Workbench and Cabinets

Husky All-Welded Construction

This is one solid workbench and cabinet. I’ve looked at Husky boxes nearly every time I’ve gone into a Home Depot. I have wanted one of these style boxes for years.

The all-welded construction of these boxes, along with the heavier 19 gauge steel makes these boxes very sturdy. The drawers open and close so smoothly. They aren’t “rickety” like the older boxes I’ve had. I had an old Craftsman box I bought years ago (you may have seen it in some of my early videos as my miter saw stand. Every time I opened and closed the Craftsman drawers, one side would open more than the other making them very hard to open and close. In other words, they weren’t smooth. The drawers on the Husky are butter smooth. The soft close drawers are a nice touch as well.

Husky Mobile Workbench Power Strip

I really like the fact that there are power strips on this cabinet in several places. I have my CNC plugged into one on the end. My laptop and hutch light is plugged into the one inside the hutch. This adds a lot of convenience to this workbench. I like that all of the power can be connected to each other. In other words, you can plug one power strip into a power outlet, and then plug the other powerstrips into the first powerstrip and they will all be powered from the first. This is very handy to have and conserves rare outlet space in the shop. Simply plug other power strips into the outlet labeled “adapter” to power the other power strip.

I like that this entire storage setup is on robust 6-inch casters. I can (if I ever wanted to) fairly easily move this box around the shop, or more likely move to a new location in the future.

Husky Hutch Pegboard

And, while it doesn’t specify you can, I like that I can store things on top of this cabinet as well. Currently, I have my old DeWALT miter saw on top of the left cabinet. And on top of the right cabinet, I have my Laguna ai cleaner. I’m not certain that I would add too much weight on top of the hutch. I’m sure it’ll hold lighter-weight objects without any issue.

I love the fact that I have so many storage options with this combination. I have shelves and drawers as well as the hutch. I love that I have various depths and width drawers to store all types of items from hand tools to power tools and more.

I appreciate the fact that Husky didn’t glue on their badging. The plastic “Husky” badges are on both side cabinets, the hutch, and the mobile workbench. They are held in place by plastic pins into pre-drilled holes on each item. I was able to easily pop them out without issues. There are holes there now, but I like the look better than the Husky badges plastered everywhere.

The price. I know, you may think I am crazy. I paid a little over $2,400 for this combo. That is a lot of money for a toolbox. However, I do believe I got a good value for the price. I think the side cabinet is a little overpriced at $398, plus I was required to pay another $100 shipping on just that piece. The Workbench, hutch, 2-drawer riser, and side cabinet were just over $1,700 and shipped free. Overall, I think the entire setup is excellent quality for what you’re paying for it. I think this box will last me a lifetime in this shop, and hopefully one day, in the new shop.
